What is Malware?

"Malware, short for malicious software, is software designed to infiltrate a computer system without the owner's informed consent. The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code." - Wikipedia

For our purposes, Malware poses as a legitimate program or service, but when the user initiates the program, the computer becomes infected with virus-like behavior. In many cases, the computer needs to be re-imaged to return to normal usefulness. The most prevalent and common form of malware will inform the user that the computer is infected with a virus and that they must run a program to clean the infected computer. Running this program actually lets the virus loose.

Install MalwareBytes or ComboFix and run these programs. They have been relatively successful in the past.
